PART VII
BRING ON THE BLINGOLOGY
(Jewelry Terms of Miscellany)
Here are a few terms that don't necessarily fall into previous categories (gemology, metallurgy, etc.), but are important to know -- so we're calling this latest installment "terms of miscellany."
THE OTHER STUFF
Chain Tag: a flat piece of metal where the quality mark or trademark may be stamped or engraved. |
Enamel: an semi-transparent or opaque glass or substance applied to a metal surface; usually for protective or ornamental purposes. |
Champlevé:
a technique of enameling a design where hollows (lines or cells) are cut into the surface of a metal base and filled with colored enamel (pronounced shah-leh-vay). |
Cloisonné: an ancient technique of decorative enameling in which colored enamel, glass, or gemstones are separated by strips of flattened wire outlining a design on a metal base (pronounced cloy-zon-aye). |
Guilloché: a technique of filling engraved geometric patterns on metal bases with a translucent enamel layer. (pronounced gee-oh-shay). |
Plique-à-jour: a technique of enameling where the design is outlined with metal and filled-in with colored enamels, without any backing creating a stained glass window effect (pronounced pleek-ah-zhoor). |
Filigree: a lace-like ornamental work formed from intricately-arranged thin wires of precious metal. |
Hypo-Allergenic: jewelry which cause fewer allergic reactions; may include metals such as stainless steel, titanium, gold, etc. |
Milgrain: a jewelry detail technique of jewelry where the edge of a piece is shaped with fine metal beading to create an ornate border (also millgrain or milgraine). |
Well, we're almost wrapped up on this in-depth primer on all the things that bling -- jewelry. Our final section will deal with jewelry care, storage, and cleaning. Stay tuned!
