This auction features an eclectic mix of antiques, art, and more — all assembled over the years from this couple’s extensive world-wide travels. Destinations included South Asia and the Pacific, where they acquired works of art, Persian carpets, paintings and fine furniture along the way. Many of the art works are signed originals from local artists. We invite you to peruse this fine estate collection and register your bids. Happy bidding!
ABOUT THE COUPLE:
Dr. Guy Baird, originally from Newland, NC, served as a medical officer in Europe for three years during World War II. After the war he received his Ph.D. in agronomy from Cornell University. He spent two decades with the Rockefeller Foundation doing agricultural research in Colombia and India with his first wife, Betty. During their travels through South America and South Asia, they acquired numerous art works and hand-carved furniture. Upon their return to the U.S., Guy worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in New York and Washington D.C. Betty passed away in 1981.
He married his second wife, Ingrid, in 1984. Ingrid was born in Frankfurt, Germany, during World War II. She attended art school in Offenbach, Germany where she studied design, watercolor painting, illustration, and woodblock printing. In 1958 she moved to northern Italy. Fluent in German, English, and Italian, Ingrid worked as a translator at trade shows and conferences for various European businesses. During her 25 years in Italy, Ingrid developed a passion for Italian art and furnishings. She brought her collection to the United States in 1983, where she met and married Guy.
Together they moved to Bangladesh and then India where Guy continued his work in agricultural research with USAID until his retirement in 1989. In 1989 they moved to Fearrington Village near Chapel Hill, North Carolina where they settled for 31 years. After retirement, Guy continued his work in agriculture by contributing to the Fearrington community parks development, writing articles on plants and geology for various periodicals, consulting on agricultural projects with the Rockefeller Foundation, and volunteering at the NC Botanical Gardens. Throughout her life, Ingrid continued as an artist by painting and sketching landscapes, illustrating books, and painting backdrops for community theaters. Guy and Ingrid passed away in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
