Q&A with Amal Kapen: Exploring Her Antique Passion
How did you become interested in estate sales and online auctions?
Antique hunting and auctions are in my blood; my father was a collector and attended many live auctions. While I’d love to say I source from Paris and England, most of my sourcing comes from auctions. Going online was the logical next step for me. I would rather restore an antique than buy something new; the quality and craftsmanship of old pieces, even vintage ones, cannot be beat.
How do you describe your design style or aesthetic?
Many of my interiors incorporate new and antique or vintage furnishings, infused with cheerful color, art, and natural elements to create a youthful and colorful twist. I tend to gravitate toward classic decor, often tagged with the “Grandmillennial” moniker. My love of mid-century regency style makes me a traditionalist at heart.
What are some things you always find yourself bidding upon in online auctions?
My purchases range from case pieces to rugs, art, upholstery, and accessories. While I always look at antique rugs and art, somehow, I end up with more sideboards and mirrors than I can store!
What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?
My favorite thing changes month to month, but it's usually art. Recently, I acquired a set of hand-colored 19th Century botanical engravings in gilt frames at an estate sale. Antique art is often elevated by unique frames; even if restoration is needed, the acquisition is always worth the price and effort.
Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?
Start small and stick with a reputable auction house like Black Rock Galleries, which thoroughly vets and accurately describes its items.
Consider getting a condition report for larger items. Do your homework, caveat emptor — there are no returns at auction.
Amal Kapen's keen eye for timeless pieces and her passion for antique hunting continue to inspire budding designers and enthusiasts alike. Her ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new serves as a testament to the enduring charm of antiques in interior design.
Her selections remind us that the past can beautifully coexist with the present, creating spaces that are both rich in history and utterly contemporary. Thank you, Amal, for sharing your expertise and passion with us.
