Charles Olivier de Penne (French, 1831 - 1897) was a French painter whom belonged to the famed French Barbizon school. Charles Olivier de Penne began his artistic career with historical paintings but once he began associating with other Barbizon school artists, de Penne's work quickly shifted focus. Charles Olivier de Penne's work shifted focus towards animals within the landscape. De Penne is best known for his fabulously detailed paintings depicting hunting scenes and animal oriented landscape paintings.
The current painting depicts a trio of dogs, including two basset hounds, in states of standing and sitting, huddled together on the grass, nearby a dirt path which cuts through the foreground. Magnificently painted with detailed imagery of the trees, grass and wildflowers, sky. The play between light and shadow can be seen throughout and illustrates the artists painterly talents.
Signed lower right corner.
Presented in an elaborately carved and gilt finished frame.
Condition: The panel is loose in its frame and could be re set and stabilized. There is slight wear to the trim of the painted panel, around the circumference where the painting meets the frame. Minor wear to the frame including seam splits and minor losses to the gilt finish. Overall the painting is fabulous and presents as such.
