Q&A with Ashley
How did you become interested in estate sales and online auctions?
It may sound cliché, but I have always considered myself an old soul with a strong connection to the past, in particular all things French and antique. I think a big part of that stems from the relationship that I have with my Mom-mom (my Grandmother on my mother’s side). She is probably one of the most fabulous women you will ever meet! Her sense of style and love of collecting, especially French items, made a lasting impression on my own personal style.
Growing up, I used to refer to her home as “my favorite castle.” It is filled with the most amazing antique rugs, beautiful vintage china, and walls covered with stunning oil paintings in ornate frames.
There’s a special sentiment to the pieces she curated over her lifetime. Each one carries a memory and a sense of pride which I want to apply and carry on while I further my own collections in my own home.
Attending an amazing estate sale or scrolling through an online auction gives everyone the opportunity to find unique pieces that create a memorable space, without having to travel overseas or across the country to get them.
I am also a huge fan of the “thrill of the hunt” and the endorphins you get when you finally find your unicorn piece. So after my first successful auction I was hooked.
How do you describe your design style or aesthetic?
When asked about my style, I like to say “I have Versailles taste on a Pittsburgh budget”. I am a proud maximalist with a strong connection to the past and the beautifully curated spaces; much like the ones that you would find in a French Chateau or English Country house.
I want our home to feel like it’s been curated over generations, layered with beautiful and unique pieces that ultimately create a formal and elegant space, while at the same time, feeling warm and welcoming.
What are some things you always find yourself bidding upon in online auctions?
Currently my list is:
1. Oil paintings in antique frames. (My husband always says I have more than I have wall space for. But I can never walk away from a great painting at a fair price. You can always find a spot to show it off.)
2. Large French chandeliers. (In particular, I’ve been hunting for a French empire style chandelier. But if I see a great French chandelier, I have to put a bid in.)
3. A great mirror! (A mirror can make such a statement to a room. So if I find a unique one in great shape I have to bid.)
What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?
This question definitely makes me feel like I have to pick a favorite child. But if I had to choose, I’d say either a set of 1930’s custom Louis XV chairs that I won in a Philadelphia auction for less than $200 (which still feels like a total steal) or my antique French Empire roll top desk with Marquetry inlay. Both pieces reside in our living room so I get to admire them daily!
Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?
When you are looking for a particular item, play around with different keywords. For example, if you are looking for a Louis XV commode, and nothing comes up, type in more basic searches. Choose terms like “chest of drawers,” “Louis XV,” “French dresser,” “antique dresser,” etc.
I also strongly recommend setting a budget. It is too easy to get carried away with the win and end up over-spending on a particular item. But, with that, also factor-in the loss.
If that extra $100 will keep you from being up all night, regretting the loss of your unicorn item, then spend it. If that extra $100 is being spent and it’s an item you already have four of, maybe accept the loss. Save the money and put it toward an item you can’t live without.
In this expertly curated collection and insightful conversation, Ashley Piomelli opens the doors to a place where luxury and affordability meet. She invites you to transform your living space into a haven of timeless elegance without breaking the bank. Are you ready to get started?
