National Consignment Day
BRG Happenings | PUBLISHED 10.05.20 | Jennifer Ventresca
Something exciting happens every first Monday of October. No, it's not the official countdown to Election Day. No, it's not the start to leaf-peeping season (although it generally is a good time to start peeping!). What is it?
NATIONAL CONSIGNMENT DAY!
What is National Consignment Day?
National Consignment Day was created in 2017 by a West Coast consignment retailer. This "holiday" promotes awareness of apparel industry waste with the end goal of reducing that waste. It is estimated that a staggering 75% of the over 80 billion articles of apparel manufactured each year end up in U.S. landfills each year. That's 60 billion pieces of clothing, accessories, shoes, etc.
What can you do to commemorate National Consignment Day?
Take a quick survey of the items in your closet and around your house. What do you use regularly? What have you not used in a while? What can you live without? Then decide if you should:
1) Consign: Articles that are in really nice condition can be consigned to a variety of businesses that specialize in the sale of pre-owned merchandise.
Fine pieces (i.e., couture apparel, heirloom jewelry, antiques, MCM furniture, art) should be directed to a reseller that caters to luxury-level buyers for your items.
Average pieces (i.e., everyday clothing, good condition furniture and decorative arts) can be directed to a variety of resellers that process and sell good quality pieces.
2) Donate to a Charitable Reseller: Reducing waste and doing a good deed at the same time is a win-win for everyone. Be sure to consider the condition of anything you plan to donate before doing so. You should only donate items that are in good, usable condition. There are a variety of charitable organizations with consignment stores whose sales proceeds directly benefit the charity.
Note: Inasmuch as the goal of National Consignment Day is to reduce waste, if you have an item that is truly unusable, please do not donate it to charity -- unless that organization deals directly in junk management. For example: donating a virtually destroyed sofa with torn cushions and pet stains creates a hardship on the charity to discard.
