Light it Up!

We've all heard the phrase, "mood lighting," right? Your choices in lighting will help set the tone (or mood) for your space ... romantic, whimsical, minimalistic, formal, etc. In the age of recessed lighting, the idea of accent lighting is often an afterthought to many individual design choices.
Here are some of our thoughts on choosing the right lighting!
|
1. When thinking about lighting include accent lighting in your overall scheme.
Recessed lighting is fine for general lighting. But in the evening or morning hours, it's often nice to experience the warm glow that accent lighting offers. Accent lighting also offers more versatility in where your light is directed. Place a floor lamp next to your favorite reading chair. When you're ready to move your furniture around the room, the light moves just as easily.

2. Don't go all matchy-matchy!
There was a time when just about everyone buying lamps would get matching lamps for the entire room. While the lamps served their purpose well enough, the room itself was often less intriguing -- from a design standpoint. For a more eclectic, interesting look, choose compatible, but different lighting pieces to enhance your room. Mix metals with porcelain or wood with glass pieces. Mix different shapes, textures, and finishes. Perhaps tie them all together with a similar shade color or shape. Play around with it. Have fun!

3. Consider the types of bulbs, lumens, and colors!
Changing the way any particular lamp my "feel" in any space may be as easy as changing the bulb. Consider how a bright white bulb (a bulb's brightness is measured by lumens) may work differently in your space compared to a soft white, LEDs vs. incandescent. Some white bulbs appear more blue, yet others more yellow. An easy change to make? Yes, but all too often overlooked.

4. Finally, consider scale!
Going too big or too small with any lighting fixture could be disastrous for setting the right design tone for your space. The piece will all look out of place and your room will be "off" and many will not really know why.
