Yohanan Simon aka Hans Yohanan was a German - Israeli painter born in Berlin in 1905.
From early on Simon began his studies with art world icons including Max Beckmann at the Art Academy in Munich.
By "1928, Simon won a scholarship from the Jewish community in Berlin to study painting in France" in Paris at the prestigious Ecole Beaux-Arts.
In Paris he studied at the Ecole Beaux-Arts. By, "1934, Simon was sent to work for Vogue in New York and while there worked with the artist Diego Riviera on his huge mural in Rockefeller Center. He moved back to Paris in 1935." By 1936 Simon had left Europe and immigrated to 1936.
The artists early work often has elements of Social realism, whereas this painting is more in the style of his later works which delved more into abstraction, expressionism and color under the influence of iconic artists Fernand Leger, Diego Rivera and other Fauvists.
The current painting has wonderful depth and texture from its impasto and certainly falls into the style of work Simon would have been painting under the influence of Fauvist artists with colorful palette and vivid almost surrealistic decorative motif.
Signed and dated lower right.
Presented with a fabric filet and framed.
Condition: There is heavy wear to the filet with losses and nics and losses to the finish of the frame with some wear to the paper which is dusty and could use a cleaning. The dust and dirt finds crevices within the raised impasto however, despite the painting presents wonderfully overall.
