Item Description
Four wood canes and one riding crop, displaying great knot textures, etched and colored designs, and metal repousse bands around horn and bone handles. One cane's gilt band is engraved "J. B. Hays." and is dated January, 1897, while the heel is marked "Daisy."
Verbal provenance: Major John Betts Hays (American, 1839-1898) of Meadsville, Pennsylvania, took part in the campaign at Chattanooga and the battle of Chickamauga, 1863.
Condition: Displays well with expected wear commensurate with age. Scuffs, scratches, checking, discoloration, and minor finish wear as seen in pictures. Tarnishing and losses to metal that does not significantly detract from appearance.
