A wonderful set of four colored engravings of big cats by William Home Lizards (Scottish, 1788-1859) including "Felis Leopardus," "Felis Sumatrana," "Felis Pardalis," and "Felis Tigris."
Each is handsomely displayed matted with gilt fillets in excellent burlwood veneered frames.
William Home Lizars was a Scottish painter, engraver, and publisher who was influenced by his father, also a publisher and engraver. Lizars attended the Trustees' Academy, where he was enrolled along with Sir David Wilkie, another Scottish artist renowned for his genre paintings. He was also acquainted with J.J. Audubon, whom he helped network with other local luminaries. Lizard would go on to inherit his father's printing business, while perfecting an etching technique that utilized wood-engraving for book illustrations.

Some slight water stains and foxing to the trim around the borders but overall the set presents well overall.
