Item Description
William Baptiste Baird (American, 1847-1917) was born in Chicago, Illinois but moved to Paris in pursuit of advancing his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvan and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1872 until 1899.
Baird is best known for his oil paintings depicting rural subject matter including farm animals. Baird moved throughout France and Switzerland in the later years where he continued to paint.
The current work depicts a group of 6 sheep in a mountainous landscape. The sheep are in various states of rest and grazing in a green pasture with towering mountains in the distance.
Signed and inscribed Paris and dated 1877.
Condition: Lined canvas, minor wear to the trim and chips with losses to the gilt frame including top left corner and the scrolled section in the upper right. Wear is commensurate with age and handling but overall the painting is in good form and presents astoundingly well.
