Wilbur Henry Lansil (1855–1897), nicknamed "Bibber," was a prominent American painter known primarily for his portraits of cattle. He was part of a family of artists and businessmen based in Bangor, Maine, and later Boston, Massachusetts.
This oil on canvas depicts a pastoral landscape with cows wading in shallow water. The classic rural scene with a brown and black cattle in a marshy field in the foreground with trees in the background set against a cloud dotted sky.
Presented in a gilt frame, signed lower left and dated. Also signed, titled and dated on verso.
