Item Description

Fantastic, large oil on canvas painting titled "Morning Light" by artist Wesley Weber (American, 1838 - 1914).
As noted on verso, which can be seen in the attached lot images, Weber was an American artist whom was "born in Gardner, Maine in 1838. He was a self-taught artist who produced hundreds of paintings including landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, depictions of animals and scenes of the Civil War."
A label on verso states the work coming from Roger King Gallery Of Fine Art in Newport Rhode Island which specializes in Fine Paintings of the 19th & Early 20th Century.
The lovely large canvas depicts the sea at dawn or dusk with the light peaking through a patch of clouds. The viewer sees the ocean from a sandy beach with rolling waves crashing along the shore. There are sailboats off in the distance which are illuminated in a masterful way by the artist. It seems the sailboats and the water where they sail catch the brilliant light the artist depicted.
Presented in a carved wood and gesso gilt decorated frame. The frame has intricately carved floral and vine decoration carved in high relief. There is a name placard denoting the painting was painted by Wesley Webber, in addition to the artists signature seen in the lower right corner, on the portion of the canvas dedicated to sandy beach.
25.5"H x 35.5"W - sight
37"H x 47"W - framed

Condition: There is wear to both the frame and canvas. The frame has losses to the gilt decorative finish in addition to splits at the seams and other minor cracks, some of which appear to have been repaired and others where the chips have revealed losses where the wood substrate below the wood, and gesso and gilt finish can be seen around the high relief areas in and around the floral carving.
The painting has craquelure common for late 19th - early 20th century works like this painting There are also wear and minor paint losses around the border where the frame meets the painting. There is also an area of wear in the center of the painting where the clouds show the light come through. This may have been intentionally painted lighter to show sunlight but it is now showing some wear and surface losses. There is also what may have been a restored tear to the upper right corner of the canvas in an area that appears to have been repaired and in painted. The verso of the canvas shows spots and minor stains and the painting could certainly benefit from a cleaning / restoration but overall presents wonderfully.
