This vibrant, hand-carved wooden peacock sculpture captures the soulful charm of traditional Indian folk art. Originally crafted as a ritual vehicle or processional decorative element, the piece features a classic tiered rectangular base and a small, flat saddle platform on its back—traditionally intended to support a small deity figurine or offering.
The underlying wood is expertly primed with a thick layer of traditional gesso plaster, which serves to smooth out the natural wood grain and provide structural body. The intricate, tactile textures—such as the dotted patterns on the breast and the concentric rings on the wings—are built up using raised gesso relief work. The sculpture is hand-painted in a rich, time-honored palette featuring earthy ochre, vivid crimson, deep forest green, and cerulean blue.

Condition: The piece exhibits an attractive, authentic patina with widespread cracking and flaking across the gesso layer. Loss to the crest, feet and lower feathers.
