A wonderful paper mache relief adorns the exterior of a metal receptacle. The relief depicts a Victorian-styled scene of people in winter clothing, with one person carrying a pine tree and another pulling a handcart of holly. Streetlights are seen in the background among a sky full of bare trees. The interior of the receptacle is lined in chartreuse velvet, with a garland of cord and trim at the top edge. The trim is also seen at the bottom of the exterior, finishing the cohesive piece. The exterior scene appears to be signed Francis Smith.
The receptacle is accompanied by two walking canes. The first cane comes in natural tan hued wood, with a contrasting dark wood handle with a brass rim at the neck. The handle sides are beautifully carved with vining leaves, with the stem of the cane decorated with similarly carved bands. The stem is lightly labeled "United Nations." The cane ends in a metal tip.
The second cane features a red-toned hardwood body with a brass curved handle, decorated with floral engraving. The body of the cane is simply decorated by a black and brass band, and ends in a black rubber tip.
Condition: All pieces display well with wear commensurate with age. Surface scratches and finish wear to the canes, especially towards the bottom tips. Toning and discoloration to the paper mache, and discoloration to the interior velvet at the bottom.
