Kate Greenaway (English, 1846-1901) watercolor on paper, exterior genre scene depicting three young girls fishing in the pond in foreground and two chatting under the shade of a large tree in the back. A large brick manor rests in the distance and is frame by budding trees. Monogrammed in lower left corner. Matted behind glass in late 19th/early 20th century gold-painted frame.
[UPDATE 4/6] Removed and examined out of frame. Paper affixed to board with pencil notations along the margins bearing Greenaway's initials. Publisher's stamp to board verso as well as additional pencil notations. Pencil inscription along top of frame which reads "This is an original watercolor by Kate Greenaway."
[Updated 4/6] Expected signs of use including wear and losses to frame. Heavy foxing to board. Wooden support slats removed to examine painting, replaced and reinforced with tape.
Overall measures 21 1/4" h. x 28 1/2" w.; ss: 12 1/2" h. x 19 1/2" w.
