Item Description

Part of the historical group the "Nanking Cargo", a name given to a 150,000-piece hoard of Chinese porcelain and 125 pure gold ingots that was auctioned by Christie’s Amsterdam office in 1986.

The Nanking Cargo Shipwreck Story c1750:

"The Nanking cargo is the most famous of the shipwreck cargoes. It attracted worldwide media attention when it was auctioned by Christie's Amsterdam in April 1986. The ship named 'The Geldermalsen' belonged to the Dutch East India Company. Setting sail from Canton on December 18th 1751, bound for Amsterdam, she was carrying valuable cargo consisted of over 160,000 pieces of porcelain, tea, raw silk, textiles and one hundred and forty five gold ingots. In early January 1752, after 16 days sailing, the Geldermalsen hit a reef and sank in the South China Sea. The Dutch East India Company conducted a very thorough investigation of the sinking, thinking that fowl play (for the gold aboard) might have been the case. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985-86, shipped to Amsterdam and sold two hundred and thirty four years later."

Both plates retain their Christie's "The Nanking Cargo" auction sticker.
