Item Description
Thomas Sidney Cooper (British, 1803-1902) was an English landscape artist known for his representations of sheep and cattle within majestic landscape settings. Cooper first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1833 and by 1845 had become an Associate of the Royal Academy.
The current work, "Cattle By A River" majestically depicts a trio of naturalistically presented cattle in a marvelously painted landscape. Immense level of detail can be evidenced when examining everything from the bulls musculature to the play of light and shadow throughout the landscape.
Signed in the lower middle and dated somewhat indistinctly, circa 1840's.
An old Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition label can be found on verso.
Presented within a carved and gilt finished wood frame.
Provenance: There is a lot number and date on verso which could not be found.
However a near exact comparable painting on panel, possibly the study for the current work being offered on canvas was found. The near exact, smaller painting on panel was painted in 1845 with the near exact imagery differing only in its wider margins with slight variations to the background was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, 19th Century European Art sale, 10/17/2007, lot 187, sold $17,050 EUR.
Condition: Lined canvas, some wear and minor craquelure. Chipping and loss of finish to areas of the gilt frame.
All wear is commensurate with age and display however despite wear the painting is stunning and presents magnificently. See lot images for further visual inspection as they are considered part of the lot condition report.
