In 1920, Chiu began his studies abroad where he quickly became a known member within various European and American artistic groups. Of note, Chiu was the first known foreigner to have been granted membership of Royal Society of British Artists.
Chiu's style fantastically blended Eastern and Western artistic aesthetics. His use of color and perspective is unique. His works often bear resemblance to Chinese scroll paintings which are laid out in longer scrolls than is typical of Western artistic ideals.
