Susan Grisell (Connecticut, b. 1946). She is well-known for her plein-air New England landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes, having studied under the respected New England Impressionist painter Bernard Lennon.
The scene features a row of traditional white-clapboard multi-story houses partially veiled behind a screen of mature trees. The composition utilizes a balanced interplay between the structural lines of the homes and the organic, soft forms of nature.
The palette is dominated by a rich array of autumnal tones, featuring brilliant oranges, ochres, and golden yellows in the foliage. These fiery colors contrast against a pale blue sky, the crisp white facades of the homes, and deep green pockets of late-season grass and pine needles.
