A Studio of Miguel Canals (Spanish, 1925-1995) oil painting on board depicting a scene of the Virgin Mary in a blue robe with a red hem, looking to the left while holding an infant Jesus looking to the right. The pair stand in a landscape on a dirt ground overlooking a calm blue pond leading to a view of town architecture on the horizon of rolling green hills. Stencil marked on the verso Studio M. Canals.

Displayed in a stunning aedicula style gilt wood and gesso architectural frame designed with a triangular pediment over a wide scalloped border and composite style fluted columns leading to a lower band of elegant acanthus leaf relief.

Condition

Craquelure to the painting and a split down the center of the panel. Finish wear and gesso loss to the frame, most notably on the left side. Despite wear still a gorgeous piece with a wonderful time-loved aesthetic and classical presence.
