Sir James Jebusa Shannon (1862-1923) oil on canvas, "Portrait of Miss Jean Graham", Ca. 1889.
An incredible impressionist painting of museum quality, depicting Miss Jean Graham posing in a spindle back chair wearing a marvelously painted dress with fantastic use of light and shadow and the drapery. An animal skin throw blanket peaks out as it is draped around the arm of the chair. With her right hand she can be seen holding an open book with a gaze that directly confronts the viewer. The artist has meticulously depicted an intricate ground, likely a wall paper. A chest with a footed vase and flowers can be seen on top of the chest.
The painting is an overall masterpiece and is presented within a carved and gilt finished frame.
The frame bears a plaque which notes the name of the artist as well as denoting the work was "Exhibited Royal Academy 1889 / Gift of Baron Thomas Shannon Foran, Duc de Saint-Bar".
The painting bears a gallery label on verso from Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc.
