Ihor Korotash was born in the Ukraine in 1957. From 1969 until 1973, he studied art at the Ivano-Frankivsk Art School. At the age of thirteen, he participated in his first art exhibition and was awarded a first place prize for his graphic images and sculptures. In 1973, he moved to the Carpathian Mountains to study art at the Kosiv Art College. He studied at Kosiv until 1978 when he began his two year service in the Soviet Army. Despite difficulties, he continued to paint and present his art throughout is two years in the service. Upon his return to civilian life, Ihor was employed as an industrial designer.
Korotash came to the United States in 1992 to pursue his life long dream of developing his career as an artist. He paints landscapes with an impressionistic style that tempt not only our sense of sight, and even sound, but also our sense of touch. The tactile quality of his paintings moves an on-looker beyond simple viewing to being drawn into the scene. He has taken his ability and techniques used in sculpting, and has applied them to a two-dimensional plane. When viewed closely, what the eye pieces together at a distance is seen as building blocks seemingly placed at random.
Korotash has been commissioned to create paintings and murals for private individuals, various establishments and galleries. In 1994, his works were first exhibited in a well renowned gallery on Madison Avenue. Currently he is a participant in group exhibitions throughout New York City.
