Item Description

Sheryl Koch (American) is the daughter of Artisan Janice Chesnik, the founder of Chesnic Scopes. Sheryl and her mother Janice both independently began creating kaleidoscopes in 1980 and eventually joined forces forming the Chesnik-Koch Scopes Kaleidoscopes from 1982 to 1988.

"Sheryl’s kaleidoscopes are bold and dynamic. In addition to popularizing the wheel system, she is also credited with originating the double image Gemini kaleidoscope, which produces two focal points in the image. She refers to herself as a visual person, and this love of visual beauty can certainly be seen in the images produced by her kaleidoscopes... She is a regular instructor in various stained glass and enameling techniques at the John C. Campbell School of Folk Art near her home studio in Brasstown, NC."

The current kaleidoscope is a fabulous model which is in two parts, including the stand which is fitted with pegs onto which the body of the kaleidoscope fits in neatly.
With wonderfully finished wood frame and metallic and glass circular end, the viewer looks through the aperture on one end and spins the wheel to see a fabulous myriad of colors and shapes.
The kaleidoscope is incised signed "Sherly Koch 11-90 (c for incorporated) 89 # 201"

4 1/2"Diam. of metallic and glass wheel
12"L of kaleidoscope
11 1/2"H x 12"L x 4 1/2"W - total on stand

Condition: Some surface scratches to the wood finish and light gentle wear but overall works well and a fabulous piece of functional, optical art.
