Signed A. Rodin on one side edge, Foundry mark Alexis Rudier Fondeur Paris on the back edge. Original cast ca. 1919-1921. A reduced cast bronze of the original large scale commemorative monument made in 1895-99 by Rodin. This starved figure standing in a tortured pose in pain and despair wears sackcloth and a rope belt. The bourgeois (burgers) of Calais had been under siege from 1346-1347 from the English in a battle during the Hundred Year's War in Europe. This led to mass starvation and surrender, but they escaped execution. Rodin cast a group of these figures for the monument in 1895-99.
