Item Description
Oil on canvas depicting the English vessel commanded by George Hay, 1877, under full sail off the white cliffs of Dover. The work was painted by the British marine artist Richard Ball Spencer.
The ship was built in 1865 by Laurence Hill & Co. in Port Glasgow for John & William Grice of London. It was originally constructed as an iron, three-masted sailing ship. Around 1877, the vessel was re-rigged from a ship to a barque, which is the configuration shown in the painting.
The oil on canvas is presented in a maple frame with a gilt fillet. The artwork is signed and inscribed by the artist as "R.B. Spencer/Barque, Sarah, Crice, Comd, George Hay, 1877". Christie's provenance as evidenced by Christie's sticker on verso.
