Incredibly Rare Georg Donatus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse (German, 1906-1937) signed photograph. Three quarter portrait depicting the young Duke seated while looking off to the left. Signed in ink along bottom right edges above impressed photographers stamp. Double matted with the large mat having a manufacturer's impression to lower right.
Donatus was the nephew of Empress Alexandra and Emperor Nicholas II of Russia. He passed away with his family suddenly in a plane crash in 1937 when the pilot attempted to make an emergency landing in Ostend because Danatus' wife, Princess Cecilie of Greece & Denmark, went into labor during the flight. The plane included Georg Donatus, Cecilie, their two young sons, Georg's mother Grand Duchess Eleonore, the children's nurse, a family friend, a pilot and two crewmen,
Condition: Expected signs of wear including foxing and toning to matting and paper, wear to the edges of photograph, small pinholes in each of the four corners of photograph. Creasing and wear to matting corners.
