President Herbert Hoover signed letter address to Secretary of Commerce, Robert P. Lamont. Dated November 11, 1932 and typed on White House stationary, the letter makes note of the friendship between Hoover and Lamont. Signed in ink along the bottom. stapled to the note is a small slip of pink paper with a typed note to Hoover, presumably from Lamont, wishing him a fine Christmas. Also accompanied with a Western Union telegram from Lamont to the President after his 1932 defeat stating, "You fought a good fight. You kept the faith. Your place is secure in the hearts of your friends and of your country in the long run, Robert P Lamont," dated Nov. 10, 1932.
Overall good condition, letter with toning and creasing, Western Union telegram with heaving toning, creasing, tears and loss.
Letter measures 9" h. x 7" w.
Provenance: From the estate of Chauncey Belknap, attorney and former US Supreme Court clerk to Oliver Wendall Holmes who served as a World War I lieutenant in the infantry in France assigned to the headquarters of General of the Armies John J. Pershing and later worked for Maj. George C. Marshall.
