Item Description
President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) signed and inscribed letter accompanied with original responses. The letter, on White House stationary, is dated August 31, 1932 and addressed to former United States Secretary of Commerce, Robert P. Lamont (1867-1948). beyond his signature, a small handwritten note is inscribed along the bottom margin. In addition to the letter, two original unsigned and typed responses dated September 7th and 20th of 1932.
The signed Hoover letter is in good condition with some creasing from being placed in an envelope, as well as small puncture to upper left corner. The two unsigned documents are on a very fine typing paper with evidence of tears, loss and toning.
Signed letter measures 9" h. x 7" w.
Provenance: From the estate of Chauncey Belknap, attorney and former US Supreme Court clerk to Oliver Wendall Holmes who served as a World War I lieutenant in the infantry in France assigned to the headquarters of General of the Armies John J. Pershing and later worked for Maj. George C. Marshall.
