Item Description
Joseph M. Hayes (American [NY], b. August 1866) photograph and brass bugle. Hayes was a great uncle to journalist Hugh Baillie (1890-1966) and a descendant of General David Mead (1752-1816), founder of Meadsville, PA.
The brass bugle is engraved on the exterior top of the bell, reading "Joseph M. Hays Chief Bugler. 12th Reg, Int, NYC; from Society Sons of the Revolution, June 30th, 1892" with a braided rope strap.
The photograph depicts Hayes atop a horse, wearing a campaign hat and double-striped trousers with a cap ammo belt. A group of men are seen in the background sitting atop barrels around a table with large drums near a tent.
Condition: Pieces display well with expected wear commensurate with age. The bugle has atina, surface scratches, discoloration, and minor dents that do not significantly detract from appearance, with fraying and discoloration to rope. The photograph has scattered foxing and paper toning to mat; scuffs, nicks, and checking to frame.
