Item Description
A Rare jumbo enlarged print measuring 29 x 39 1/2" of the iconic Einstein photograph taken by Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) in 1947. Halsman, who had been a preeminent French photographer, fled after the fall of Paris in 1941, admitted to the United States with the help of his friend Einstein. Halsman held his specially modified camera while chatting with Einstein. According to the Walter Isaacson biography Einstein, page 494, Halsman asked Einstein if he believed there could ever be a lasting peace. Einstein answered with weary resignation, "No, as long as there will be man, there will be war." Isaacson wrote, "At that moment Halsman clicked his shutter and captured Einstein's sadly knowing eyes for what became a famous portrait." Halsman printed his own photographs and this is a special enlarged jumbo print, signed on the front and in back, which also has an early Halsman stamp on the verso (pre-implementation of Zip Codes in 1963, listing his 33 West 67th Street address as "NEW YORK 23, N.Y." and his phone number without an area code as "ENDICOTT 2-9670."). Halsman typically did not date his prints and based on the stamps and condition this appears to be printed between 1947 and 1963. Mounting brackets and wire affixed to the verso for hanging without a frame as would have been applied by the photographer. We have been unable to locate any other print of this iconic image having come to market in this size. It is usually found printed in smaller sizes and without Halsman's signature on the front.
Condition: some nicking through paper bottom and along the bottom edge, 1 1/2” damage to the very edge of the paper along the center bottom. All corners show wear. Two long scuffs along the upper part of the signature. Overall heavily faded.
