A wonderful pair of high relief Asian wood panels, finely carved to depict groups of people approaching seated figures of authority. The smaller panel features figures in gilt robes; the scene is framed by carved angles and scalloped tree tops; displaying in a recessed field of red lacquer and finishing in a rectangular red wood frame that runs flush with the height of the scene. It's topped with a pierced brass handle.
The larger panel depicts an intricately detailed scene of people on horseback and hand carriage. Trees with fanning foliage decorate the right half, while a fine house interior is seen on the left. The scene is outlined by a thin raised border with ends that curve inwards at the corners; finishing in a flat rectangular field decorated with a nacre mosaic of flowers. Tiny nacre glitter adorns the sides and the ground, giving the piece further visual interest.
Both panels bear a yellow wax maker's seal in the lower left corner.
Condition: Both pieces display well with wear commensurate with age.
The smaller panel has areas around the edges of the lacquer field where bare wood is seen; gilt finish loss, light surface scratches.
The larger panel has cracked in half horizontally, and has been well repaired with minor glue residue on the back. Minor spots of wood loss along the crack seen from the front, including a spot on the forehead of the figure in the hand carriage; areas of nacre loss in the flower mosaic; loss of gilt finish, light surface scratches. The piece would benefit from a cleaning.
