Item Description
Two early 20th Century copper gargoyles or masks/architectural elements with attached frieze, that adorned the original 1919 Commodore Hotel in New York City located at 109 East 42nd Street adjacent to Grand Central Terminal. The original copper masks, purportedly tragedy and comedy were part of a repeating, repoussé sheet copper roof cresting element on the Commodore Hotel which was designed by Warren and Wetmore. These elements, often showing a vivid verdigris patina as these, were removed in 1976 when the hotel was gutted and encased in glass to become the Grand Hyatt. While many were discarded but about 150-200 of these copper masks were salvaged.

Condition: Please see detail photos. Various expected and enhancing signs of age and use include wear commensurate with outdoor use, scattered areas of oxidation and corrosion, old repairs, remnants of building tar, assorted areas of damage and wear at corners and edges, bends and dents that do not detract from the overall historical and magnificent presentation.
