A pair of Chinoiserie-style black lacquered and gilt-decorated chairs featuring intricate hand-painted motifs and a distinctive shield-shaped or "spoonback" silhouette. The back with a gilt reeded trim encompasses a central medallion featuring a stag or deer lying beneath a fruit tree, common symbols in heraldry often representing peace, harmony, and protection along with the words DEUS TUE TUR loosely translated to GOD WATCHES OVER. The chairs with hand-painted landscapes, floral and foliate borders, and ebonized crackle glaze finishes with gold highlights.
The backs with inset half-moon hand-holds, a common design element on chairs with solid or high backs, intended to make them easier to move, lift, or pull out from a table. The shaped seats with an inset oval design, incised motif following the form of the seat, all parcel gilt. The chairs resting on straight front legs and saber back legs.
