Item Description
Louis XVI period of exquisite craftsmanship comparable to such Appliques or wall lights, as they are referred to, for royal residences such as those at Versailles. These are attributed to bronze master craftsman Pierre-Francois Feuchere who produced gilt bronzes in Paris from 1760 to 1820 for the French nobility.
Provenance: estate of an 18th c. residence in Monte Carlo where they had been since the late 1700's.
This pair feature the "Wand of Hermes", the caduceus of Greek mythology- the winged staff with two entwined snakes of the god Hermes (or Mercury). It is suspended by a bow crest and has three swirled cornucopia form lights emanating from it. Laurel leaves and wings representing the god and fruits appear below the bow, fruit clusters are below the bobeches of the cornucopia as well. Leaves along with tassels form the terminal. These may have been regilded at some point.
