Item Description
The name PIcasso lower right, indistinctly labeled and dated 40 lower left. The woman is seated in a chair with an indistinctly hand-written message in ink below. The words "chat noire" appear in the lower left and perhaps the word cafe "avec Elsa...." at the end.
At this time Picasso was with Dora Mar, his mistress and source of inspiration for his artworks. He had painted many portraits of her over a decade since the early 1940's including "Dora Maar au Chat" in 1941 in which she is seen seated in a chair with a black cat perched on her shoulders. This portrait drawing in Picasso's cubist style may also be her with a black cat. Or this may refer to a scene at the famous Chat Noire cafe in Paris at which a woman named Elsa is mentioned or indeed is the subject of this portrait.
The drawing is tacked to a white backing and presented in a black frame with glass.

Condition: The drawing is good. The tacking is partly visible in the upper right. There are some chips to the frame.
