This original Jenkins watercolor displays his signature style of paint smoothly flowing to create abstract images. HIs technique involved pouring paint on his canvases, and manipulating (lifting and tilting) the canvas to produce a fluid image. This painting by Jenkins, completed in 1969, was completed during a time period that is considered very collectible for the artist. It is mounted in a floating manner, which makes his paper canvas stand out within the frame.
The current owner purchased the painting and immediately had it professionally re-glassed with UV protective glass in t he original frame. While out of the frame, the owner took a photograph of the back of the painting, where Jenkins signed/titled/dated the painting (see last photo above). The current owner also retained the original gallery sticker upon reframing, and this is affixed the new dust cover on the back of the frame.
The paintings of Paul Jenkins have come to represent the spirit, vitality, and invention of post World War II American abstraction. Employing an unorthodox approach to paint application, Jenkins is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent color which have characterized his work since the late 1950s. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri in 1923, he became a student of Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and ultimately became associated with the Abstract Expressionists, inspired in part by the Pollock and Mark Tobey.
Jenkins' painting are held/displayed in the collections of many major museum including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum, the Tate Museum, the Smithsonian, and many more national and international museums.
