Chinese rug most likely by Walther Nichols, who established his business in 1924 in Tianjin, North China. His rugs made use of the best wool pile and cotton foundation materials and his designs made minimal use of Chinese elements, instead relying heavily on current Western design trends such as Art Deco. The rugs often made use of bold or heavily saturated colors or sometimes heavily patterned designs. This rug is remarkable for it’s subtle color palette and restrained presentation, in line with our contemporary tastes. On verso the number 22974 and some additional indecipherable text.
