Newcomb-Macklin Company of Chicago, Illinois was a promient manufacturer of hand-carved and gilded wood picture frames. The company was in operation from approximately the early 1880's until just prior to 1980.
Newcomb-Macklin's frames that were designed in the early 20th century frequently reflect the asthetics of the Arts and Crafts movement which flourished in the United States during the first quarter of the 20th century from about 1900 until 1925.
Newcomb-Macklin frames are heavily sought out for the impeccable construction and classical arts and crafts style. Necomb-Macklin counted established American artists including George Bellows, Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent as customers.
Newcomb-Macklin picture frames can be "distinguished by their unique, perpendicular corner splines, a construction feature that prevented the corners of a frame from separating over time."
The current example which is marvelously crafted and solid, features decorative carved and embellished gilt finished frame. Although the frame presents wonderfully as a mirror picture frame, it could easily be de mounted and used to frame a period American painting from the late 19th - early 20th century.

Condition: There is some wear to the gilt finished surface which could be re finished if desired or enjoyed for its vintage appeal and fabulous craftsmanship!
