Item Description
Nachum Gutman was born a part of the Russian Empire, now in the Republic of Moldova in 1898.
In 1903, the family moved to Odessa and two years later to Palestine.
"In 1908, Gutman attended the Herzliya Gymnasium in what would later become Tel Aviv. In 1912, he studied at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. In 1920–26, he studied art in Vienna, Berlin and Paris."
Gutman is known for having helped pioneer a distinctively Israeli style which moved away from the European influences of his past teachers and schooling.
The current work depicts a building with a man standing in a doorwell with a long coat and wide brimmed hat with a woman in a dress with her hands raised in the other doorwell and children nearby.
Pencil signed lower left corner, numbered in the center and titled in Hebrew in the lower right corner.
Presented matted, in a silver toned wood frame and glazed.
