Item Description
A large and authentic traditional form Japanese Snow Lantern with excellent weather/ age patina including Lichen spots. Overall condition is very good with some age related chips which do not detract from the fine presentation. (Please see all detail photos). Possibly due to different weathering surfaces, there is a color tone difference between the upper and lower portions of the Lantern. The Lantern disassembles into four separate elements to ease moving.
The Yukimi Gata Ishidōrō is the most well-known lantern that is relatively close to the ground. Yukimi is Japanese for seeing snow. This name was based on the fact that the Kasa or umbrella of the lantern can be covered with snow during the cold winter days. The snow on the Yukimi lantern is easier to see compared to other lanterns because of its proximity to the ground. Because of this, Yukimi lanterns are also called snow lanterns in English.
