Item Description
An impressive and monumental late 18th century continental armoire in sturdy chocolate brown finished oak wood. In two sections. Features a removable bonnet or crest with a dramatically arched form decorated with a large floral motif, incorporating scooped petals with elegant hand-carved relief within, echoing dainty floral sprays and foliate trims throughout.
The main body showcases two doors with shapely paneling, starburst and floral motifs adding excellent visual intrigue. The doors open to an interior of adjustable wood shelves protected with attractive cream and red botanical paper linings. The unit is finished with a serpentine apron raised on stout cabriole legs terminating with dainty scrolled feet.
Condition
Presents well overall with wear commensurate with age and use including minor surface scratches, scuffs, finish wear, and checking. The wood panel on the lower left door has shrinkage gaps. There is a long repaired crack to the crest that runs horizontally. The unit had once been used as a media cabinet but could be converted back to an armoire. The paper lined interior has some staining but could be removed.
