Offered for sale is a marvelous, signed and dated, Max Richter (German, B. 1860) oil on canvas painting. The painting depicts a man / monk in the act of shaving his face. The figure is portrayed wearing a brown tunic with head covering and circular glasses.
Seated in a chair at a desk with early 19th century hinged dressing mirror. He appears to be deeply focused on the act of shaving, holding the razor blade in his right hand and pulling the skin with his left.
There is a bowl with what appears to be a crystal ball, along with a cup to his left, ominously close to the edge of the desk.
The painting is signed, dated and marked 'Max Richter / 1892 / Munchen' to the upper left corner.
The painting is presented framed in an intricate frame with gilt finish which itself is enclosed in a nicely built wood and glass shadow box to help preserve the painting. The back side of the shadow box allows one to inspect the reverse of the canvas which is a nice element of the well constructed shadow box.
Sight: 20"H x 16"W (approx.)
Frame: 31 1/2 x 27"W (approx.)
Shadow box: 34 1/2"H x 30 1/4"W
Condition: There is craquelure to the painted finish which can be seen throughout the painting, most notable in the corners and around the trim. The craquelure is to be expected with 19th century paintings and does not diminish the value of overall appearance. The painting and its elaborate frame and shadow box all present marvelously.
