Item Description
Spectacularly painted, this signed Maurice Buffet (French, 1909-2000) oil painting depicts a rural landscape in either the fall or spring months.
Maurice Buffet was born in France in 1909 and his works hint at having been influenced by several late 19th and early 20th century artistic styles. Many works within his ouevre also present ideological and political shifts to our world, most notably the World War.
The current work presents a stark landscape with a large tree seen in the near foreground. The tree appears mostly bare of leaves with only hints of foliage left. In the midground there is a wooden fence and behind the fence are numerous small homes and buildings with walls and roofs seen in a variety of colors.
The sky is a lovely hue with hints of sky blue and yellow illuminating the upper half of the work.
Signed in the lower left corner; Initialled in a circle on verso together with a second circular stamp, mostly illegible, likely from the artist or gallery on verso.
An information page affixed to back of the frame, written in French, referring to a French gallery 'La Galerie Rappin - Gabillet, 21 rue de Miromesnil a Paris' which may or may not have to do with this specific work.
Presented with a white mat within a carved and gilt painted frame.
