Mary Potter (English, 1900 - 1981) was an English painter known for a restrained palette and use of subtle hues with which she painted works ranging from still life to landscape as well as portraits.
Potter studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and began exhibiting her wonderful paintings in London during the 1920s. By the 1950s, Potter's paintings became increasingly abstract which appealed the mid century art collectors.
This fabulous work depicts a portrait of a lady, sitting with her arms crossed and pulled back hair. The work which is figural bears the inkling of her move towards abstraction which is observable in the background which is boldly painted in vibrant hues and partially abstracted surrounding.
Signed "Potter" to the lower left hand corner.
Presented in a carved and gilt wood frame.

Condition: Good overall with some losses to the gilt finish on the frame which can be seen in the lot photos but presents fabulously overall. Wall ready.
