Magnificent sterling and 84 silver assembled antique shell motif cup, with gems. This amazing piece features a decorative sterling silver shell motif top, decorated with sea life creatures, and chased mer people, made in London in 1832, by Charles Fox.
Married to the top is an earlier base, made of an 84 or 88 silver (possibly Austrian or Russian) ornately decorated with fish, figurehead and foliate motifs, colored enamels and assorted emeralds and rubies, bezel set, and finished with a concave patterned foot.
The base, and the top, were not originally made together and were assembled at some point in history, still with a pleasing result
Marks, top: London sterling silver hallmarks, Charles Fox, 1832
Marks, bottom: None, tests lower grade silver (84 or 88)
Dimensions: 6 1/4" high x 8 1/8" long at the shell top
Weight, top: 8.950 gross ozt (there is wax residue)
Weight, bottom: 12.910 gross ozt
Condition, top: In good overall estate condition, except for the missing handle
Condition, bottom: Losses, in both enamel, stones, and rivets; base is not level. The top is removable from the bottom, please hold from the bottom. Also, please note: the 84 or 88 silver is an approximation, it may just as likely be 812 or 875
Provenience: A Bethel Connecticut Estate & former Manhattan residence.
