Lucas Van Leyden (Dutch, 1494-1533) "The Virgin And Child In The Niche" engraving on paper. A known engraving by the artist represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art among others. Ca. 1518. Here the Virgin dressed in voluminous drapery is shown holding the Christ child white standing on the orb in a niche. A radiant halo frames her face. Tacked to a paper backing and presented in a wood frame with glass. The engraving is trimmed at or near the plate mark. Labeled on verso.

About the Artist:
Lucas van Leyden was a Dutch painter and printmaker known as one of the first Dutch exponents of genre painting. He began learning about art early on from his Father and by the influence of works by Marcantonio Raimondi, Albrecht Durer, and Jan Gossaert. Van Leyden's works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the British Museum, the Princeton University Art Museum, and many others.
