This spectacular antique Louis Vuitton Rayee steamer trunk is a vintage travel trunk from the late 19th century, with a rectangular profile, leather edging, wood banding and is distinguished by its brown and beige striped canvas ("Rayée" means striped). These trunks were made from 1872-1888 and are considered rare, because the striped canvas was delicate and prone to damage during travel. They feature original brass hardware, Iozine* leather trim, and an interior with a removable tray.
The most distinctive feature of the trunk is the "Rayée" striped canvas, which was introduced in 1876 and used until 1888 as a response to counterfeiting of the brand's earlier plain canvas trunks. Rayée trunks are considered extremely rare and valuable today because the patterned canvas was less durable than later materials and was often damaged during travel.
The interior is handsome, with an attention to detail such as a studded, quilted ribboned top (for storing smaller items), straps, and a removable tray and a linen lining. The brass hardware, including the clasps and handles, are stamped with "LV", and the Louis Vuitton France and England addresses, and is finished with a red interior label plate and serial number.
*"Iozine" is the name Louis Vuitton uses for the durable, protective trim that reinforces the corners and edges of its hard-sided luggage and trunks. It is a strong vulcanized fiber, not a traditional leather, although the current house products sometimes refer to "iozine leather" in marketing materials"

Cracks, wear to wood, cracking and distress to leather, scuffing, some staining and discoloration to interior. Despite the wear (which simply gives the trunk character), this is a fabulous piece.
