Item Description

A pencil-written letter circa 1896 by President William McKinley (American, 1843-1901) to David G. Baillie, partially reading:

"Dear Mr. Baillie,
I have your kind note with telegram(?) enclosed which I have read with interest.
Will you receive my thanks for the ___ ___ ___ with the special article, with very ___ regards."

Displayed behind glass with a gray mat in a black and gilt frame.

Accompanied by a hardcover book, "Life of William McKinley: Soldier, Lawyer, Statesman" by Robert P. Porter, 1896. The flyleaf contains a hand written inscription reading "David G. Baillie informed McKinley he would be nominated if he would declare himself for Sound Money and a Sound Money plank in the Republican Party platform: With H.H. Kohlsaaf drew up a gold plank and telegraphed it out. Committed McKinley as it represented him as the Convention. Informed him of his nomination, kept him posted, helped elect him and was neglected and forgotten by the Republican Party."

The title page bears an additional note under the author's name, reading "___ at the Census: newspaper politician: at one time 'representative owner' at the New York Press."

Condition: Displays well. The letter has paper toning, discoloration, and scattered tears that do not significantly detract from appearance. The book's hardcover is detached but the spines are sturdy. Cloth wear to the cover, fading and discoloration. Paper toning and minor folds.
