Item Description
A 19th-century Swedish painted pine marriage trunk, also known as a kista and features traditional folk art painting. The chest is painted in a blue-green color with floral motifs arranged in wreaths featuring initials and a date (1832 in this instance).
The trunk is constructed of solid pine, iron-bound for strength, and often featuring forged iron handles and hinges. Traditionally, these chests were functional storage pieces used by women to store linens and quilts for their dowry before marriage
The trunk with a domed planked top with iron banding, decorative black painted bands, iron escutcheon (no key) opens to side compartment and full storage.
Dimensions: 24 3/4" W, 55" L, 26 1/2" H
Condition: loss to iron banding hinge, loss to top, 8 1/2" loss to top, missing corner iron hinge on right side front. Heavy paint loss that attests to the age and enhances the charm and appeal of the chest.
